The Car of the Future

A pessimist is a person who always expects bad things to happen. Pessimists think that today’s cars are in trouble because they use too much gas. They say the car of the future will be much, much smaller. The car of tomorrow will have no heater and no air conditioning. It’ll have no radio and no light. Tomorrow’s car will be an open air car with no doors and windows. It won’t need a pollution control system because it won’t use gas. In fact, driver will push this new car with their feet. Very few people will be killed in accidents, because the top speed will be five miles per hour. However, pessimists warn us not to ask pretty colours, because the car will come in gray only.
Optimists are sure that the future will be happy. They think that car companies will soon solve all our problems by producing the Supercar. Tomorrow’s car will be bigger, faster, and more comfortable than before. The Supercar will have four rooms, colour TV, running water, heat, air conditioning, and a swimming pool. Large families will travel on long trips in complete comfort. If gas in short supply, the Supercar will run on water. Finally, optimists promise that the car of the future will come in any colour, as long as the colour is not gray.

Growing wet rice take place in Asia, such as China, Japan, and India. Wet rice needs high temperatures in the growing season, at least 20°C for 3 or 4 months, and it also needs a rainfall of about 1800 mm during that season. The rice must be under water about 150 mm deep for most of the growing period.

As a result, it is usually grow near a river in small level fields which are surrounded by low earth walls. The farms are usually quite small-about one or two hectares in area. Although rice growing requires a lot of work, very few rice farmers use machinery. This means that rice growing is labour intensive, that is to say, a lot of people have to work in the rice fields.

At the beginning of the growing season, the farmers have to repair the low earth walls around the fields. Then, they have to prepare the soil to make it thick and muddy. After this, they must sow the seeds in special beds and then plant the seedlings in rows in the soil. It takes about four months for the rice to ripen. A few weeks before harvesting, they have to remove the water from the fields. Finally, the farmers harvest the rice, cutting it with a knife.
